Internship in Vancouver: What to Expect

What an internship in Vancouver actually feels like — the work, the team, what you’ll learn, a typical week, and what comes after.

You’ve heard about doing an internship in Vancouver. What does it actually feel like? This isn’t a how-to-find-one guide (we have a separate one of those) — this is a walkthrough of what your day-to-day actually looks like when you land an internship here. The work, the team, the rhythm, the city outside the office, and what tends to come after.

The Kind of Work You’ll Do

Internships in Vancouver run the full Canadian tech-and-creative range. You might be writing back-end code at Amazon’s Vancouver office, programming gameplay at EA, working on a VFX pipeline at Industrial Light & Magic, doing biotech research tied to UBC, or shipping product at a Mount Pleasant startup. The depth is real; the rents are too.

  • Back-end, mobile, or infrastructure engineering at FAANG and large tech employers
  • Gameplay programming, VFX, or animation at gaming and film studios
  • Cleantech, biotech, or hardware engineering at startups tied to UBC research
  • Product, design, or growth roles at Vancouver-based scaleups

Who You’ll Work With

Vancouver team structures vary by employer. FAANG offices run formal intern programs with cohort onboarding and structured mentorship. Mid-size studios run looser, with closer access to senior engineers. Startup teams are flat and fast. Pacific Rim influence and international diversity are visible in nearly every workplace.

What You’ll Actually Learn

A good internship in Vancouver teaches you more than the technical skills on the job description. The students who get the most out of their term consistently come away with:

  • How a global tech company operates at the Vancouver office level
  • Cross-time-zone collaboration (especially Pacific to US East and Europe)
  • Working at intense pace in expensive housing — budgeting matters
  • The basics of an industry that ships globally (games, VFX, software)

A Typical Week

A Vancouver intern week varies by employer but skews intense. FAANG and scaled tech offices run 9-to-6 minimum with regular meetings; gaming and VFX run on production crunch cycles that occasionally heat up. Most teams are hybrid; remote-friendly arrangements are common, which helps with the cost-of-housing pressure.

Outside Work in Vancouver

Outside work, Vancouver is the most physically beautiful Canadian city to intern in. The seawall for runs and bike rides, Stanley Park for walks, Mount Pleasant and Commercial Drive for food and nightlife, the North Shore mountains for weekend hikes, and the Sunshine Coast for ferry escapes. Winters are wet but mild; summers are dry and spectacular.

After the Internship

Vancouver internships often lead to return offers, particularly at large tech employers with formal pipelines. Even without a return offer, the Vancouver tech, gaming, and VFX networks reach into Seattle, San Francisco, and Los Angeles in ways no other Canadian city matches. The Pacific Rim orientation opens doors to Asian markets too.

💡 Tip: The strongest predictor of a great internship in Vancouver isn’t the company name on your offer — it’s how engaged you are once you’re there. Show up curious, ask one good question every meeting, and own the work that gets handed to you. The rest follows.
💡 Tip: Vancouver’s tech offices are more spread out than Toronto’s — Gastown, Yaletown, Mount Pleasant, and the West End all have meaningful clusters. If you’re interning here, factor commute time into your housing search aggressively; living in the wrong neighbourhood quietly adds an hour a day to a city that already costs enough.
💡 Tip: Cycle culture in Vancouver is real and useful — even non-cyclist offices often have showers and bike racks. If you’re here in summer, it’s the fastest commute the city has.
